{Reader’s POV}
Steam rose from the pot as I stirred the homemade stew, turning off the stove and going to get a bowl from the cabinets. Jack sat on the couch watching TV, though I could see his head twisted slightly to look back at me, watching silently as I lifted the pot to pour the stew into the cool, ceramic blue bowl. It was funny how I’d gotten used to his constant staring so fast; when I first got here I’d probably have freaked out by now. Now I was able to just ignore him easily.

        Most of the time, anyway.

“...Uh, Jack, can you please step back so I can move?” I shot him a pointed look as he stood behind me, unintentionally boxing me into a corner in the kitchen. Glancing at me for a moment, he stepped back, allowing me to walk away with the steaming bowl of stew. I made my way to the table slowly so as not to spill any, carefully setting the bowl down. As I moved to sit Jack abruptly pulled out the chair for me. I cast him a strange glance but sat down anyway, and he pushed it in before going around to sit across from me.

About a week had passed since the operation. Ever since getting home, Jack had been closer than ever. Hovering near me at almost all times, he was always watching me. It wasn’t a distrustful kind of staring and stalking, though. If it were, he’d have put the shackle on my ankle, but he didn’t. He let me wander freely, citing that I was too weak to try to escape even though I was apparently recovering “exceptionally fast” and off the liquid diet. Honestly, I think he was underestimating my strength after the surgery, but I didn’t complain.

My goal was to raise his trust enough during this limited window of freedom so that he wouldn’t feel like he ever had to put it back on me again. I really didn’t have any intentions of escaping—I’d figured out I had no where else to go way back when I hit him with a rock—and now that it was an indisputable fact that he would never try to kill me, I had even less motive to leave. Our relationship was better than ever. Staying here was the happiest outcome I could see.

At the same time, though, his hovering caused me a lot of problems. I felt like I walking on glass as I tried to avoid the subject of Buddy’s account. Fact: Jack is an incredibly curious person. He hadn’t exactly said that, but it was pretty obvious—especially when I got onto the laptop. Whenever I opened it, he’d suddenly appear behind me and watch closely. Thanks to his constant hovering, I couldn’t delete the account or photos like I wanted.

Every day he’d try to guess the password until he was locked out, at which point he’d pester me to tell him, but I always refused and he’d let the subject drop. However, I knew it was only a matter of time before he’d figure it out or force it out of me. The more time that passed, the more dangerous this secret felt. I had seen things from Jack’s past I shouldn’t have, memories he would rather forget. If Jack found out what I’d seen, I had no idea how he’d react, what he’d do to me. All I knew was that I did not want to risk his wrath.

I pushed this all out of my mind as I ate, ignoring Jack as he stared at me. Or trying to, anyway. Honestly, I’d been kind of hoping the strong scent of stew would push him away since he seemed to hate the smell of regular food. “Why’re you watching me so closely?” I asked, raising an eyebrow, and he shrugged.

“No reason. Just happy you’re back.” I glanced at him in surprise, recalling how he’d acted when he was drunk, begging and pleading not to hate him.

“...You really missed me, huh?” I asked softly, raising a spoonful of stew to my mouth and gently blowing on the surface to cool it. Jack, meanwhile, just shrugged.

“Of course I did. You’re fun to be around.” I smirked slightly at his response, swallowing so I could reply.

“Oh yeah? What do you like about me?” This made him pause, tilting his head thoughtfully. To my surprise, he slowly got up and walked over, stopping behind me. The stew’s aroma still didn’t bother him, apparently. He lifted his mask slightly as he leaned forward, sniffing at my hair as I tensed.

“...Well, for one, your hair smells good,” he commented, inhaling the scent and offering a small smirk.

“Not a good reason,” I retorted, and his smirk grew slightly.

        “Oh? Why not?”

“Because it’s just shampoo. You could just use it too.” At this point I ducked my head away and raised the bowl of stew, allowing him to get a good whiff of it. He hissed at the aroma and recoiled back, quickly pulling his mask back down over his nose.

“Rude,” he grumbled, undoubtedly glaring at me from behind his mask.

“So’s sniffing my hair while I eat,” I retorted, and he gave a low growl. I just rolled my eyes as I lowered the bowl. Growling would have scared me before, but after the appendectomy I knew this was no where near enough to incite any kind of harm to me. Smirking victoriously, I resumed eating while he stopped growling and crossing his arms.

“Still. Shampoo doesn’t smell the same when sniffing your own hair. I prefer it on your head, mixed with your natural scent.” I nearly choked when he said that. That was both one of the creepiest and most flattering compliments I’d ever gotten. I turned to stare at him, wiping the stew that had dribbled down my chin.

        “...What?”

“You smell nice,” he said, shrugging. “I don’t usually sniff my victims, but you smell... good. Nice. And the regular showers make your hair smell even better.”

“...Okay then.” I slowly turned forward once more and resumed eating. Jack stayed behind me, hovering closely. “...Uh, you’re in my personal space.”

“I know.” He stayed in place.

        “...Then move?”

“Nah.” As if to emphasize his disinterest in the idea he hovered even closer to me, making me frown.

“...Move or I’ll give you another nose-full of eau de stew,” I threatened, and at this point he backed away with his hands raised in mock surrender.

“Okay, okay, I’ll back off. But I get to pet you while watching TV on the couch.” I sighed, knowing this was as far as negotiations would probably go. Petting was always non-negotiable when it came to Jack. Lately, though, it almost felt kinda... nice. I could understand why animals liked it so much. It wasn’t a big loss for me.

“Fine,” I muttered, resuming eating at a slower pace. I could practically feel his smirk as he stepped behind me and briefly patted my head.

“Good pet,” he chuckled, making me sigh.

        “Don’t call me that...”

“But you ARE my pet. If you aren’t, what are you, then?” He tilted his head at me curiously. Your friend, I thought almost instantly, but I didn’t say it out loud. Jack wasn’t like “normal” people. I wasn’t sure he even understood the concept of regular friends. Yeah, he said he had some, but the way he talked about them, it was more of a mutual agreement not to kill each other or get in the way of each other’s kills. As such, I was kind of hesitant to say the word “friend” out loud.

“...I don’t know,” I said instead, shrugging, and I could feel his smirk again. He patted my head with a smirk.

“Good pet,” he chuckled, and headed back to the couch. I sighed as I quietly resumed eating.

Yep. Everything was back to normal now.

I just wish I knew how long this would last.

Thanks for the wait, everyone! Sorry it took so long, yesterday my brain wasn't in editing mode. ...At all. :/ Right now the buffer's at zero chapters, so yeah. The next chapter MIGHT be a little late too... :/ But anyways, here's a nice chapter with a little bit of fluff. Thanks to H0R1Z0NZ for an eye-opening RP! ^^
